HISTORY
Otterham and St Juliot Hall is an old military building, re-erected by local people in the early 1950s on land that was given for the purpose. An extension was added in the 1980s to provide a further small room and bar area. Construction of the building is of steel with timber A frames; the exterior walls are of corrugated metal, the roof is felted on boards and the whole building sits on wooden pilings. For some years now the revenue from hirers has simply been spent on repairs to the fabric of the building, and with the inevitable deterioration of the wooden pilings as well as the interior fittings, walls and roof, the building is no longer viable. The heating system is inefficient, wasteful and therefore expensive; and the kitchen does not meet the required standards. In short, we need to raise the money for a complete rebuild along modern, sustainable lines.
The Hall all decked out for the Silver Jubilee Party in 1977.
The Parish Councils of Otterham and St Juliot are the trustees for the hall and support us fully in our quest for an urgent replacement village hall for our very rural community that serves such a large area of North Cornwall. The village hall site is substantial in size and, with that in mind the local planning dept of North Cornwall District Council would allow us to keep the original hall up and running while the new hall is being built adjacent to it. This would enable us to keep our regular hirers through the rebuild period, after which the old hall would be demolished to make way for a car park.
One way and another the hall is used for some part of every day of the week, but we could offer even more activities for a wider range of people with a new hall and standards meeting today's requirements for health and safety etc.
